Digital Surrealism
Realism: Takes subject matters of the ordinary and common world which we call "reality." It almost always takes a non-exotic and non-extraordinary subject matter and theme. There is no need to think outside of the box, as that is not "real."
Fig. 1.1 Example of Realism
Surrealism: A twist on Realism. It explores the subconscious mind, with subject matters concentrating on dream-images and often aims to distort the ordinary and what we call reality
Fig. 1.2 Example of Surrealism
Dadaism: An anti war art movement with art works that is satirical and nonsensical in nature.

Tutorial
Mr. Martin had some duties to settle therefore he allowed us to pick between Thursday or Friday's class. I op(ed) for Thursday's class therefore there wasn't any class on Friday. At the start of the class, Mr. Martin first introduced and briefed us about our third project. He then taught us how to created animations and GIFs in photoshop. He taught us how to do 3 in total. Here were my takes on the tutorials:

WEEK 11 - Lecture 11 (16/6/2023)
For this week, we took the whole class to learn about After Effect. It was new to us and we learn different techniques on how to use it therefore it took us a lot of time. We learnt about keyframes, rotation, anchor point (how to shift the point of it), position, motion blur, and mask

WEEK 12 - Lecture 12 (23/6/2023)This week, we just took pictures for our final assignment. (Final Assignment: Self-titled assignment)
WEEK 13 - Lecture 13 (30/6/2023)
This week was feedback session. So we did our work in class and could ask Mr. Martin for suggestions and feedback from time to time.
WEEK 14 - Lecture 14 (6/7/2023)
Did work in class, continued with our animations.
INSTRUCTIONS
For project 3, we were to create a surrealism self-titled portrait. It has to be an animation of ourselves, sort of like telling a story about oneself through art. We art to use Adobe Photoshop and After Effects to create our work piece.
The design process will be starting from developing the ideas into sketches then translate it into a digital photography artwork.
From a still design, it will be constructed into a keyframe layering and animated version for Instagram’s IG stories format.
1. Sketch
My first sketch was a more "happy go lucky" vibe. It was a carefree place where everything is happy and there's no problems. I put some of my favourite things I like in my picture as well.
Fig. 3.1 Sketch 1 (16/6/2023)
My second sketch was more dark. It was to show how introverted and quiet I can be. It shows how judged I can feel in this society.

2. Final Digital Posters
I first did 2 posters however after feedback I edited them and forgot to save the original posters. So after feedback, I went with focusing on the 2nd poster.
DIGITAL POSTER 1:
My first poster looked very much like the sketch.

My 2nd poster is much different from my sketch. Since I chose this poster, I had to elevate it even better. I still went for the idea of being trapped in the mirror. My whole vibe was also still dark. I moved more to the scary side of things as well.

Attempt 2:
After some more feedback during week 14, I added something else. (Face Crack)

3. Animation
The animation was done in AfterEffects as instructed to do so.

Animation Attempt #2:
After some feedback during week 14, I edited my animation. I added, altered, and took away animations. I also added some background music.

FEEDBACKWeek 11:
"Find better and more beautiful pictures for moodboard for I can know your art direction."
Week 13:
"Both posters too plain, can add more things. Some of the things added doesn't fit with the theme. The dog and hand makes the poster ugly. (Poster 1) The things you put for example the red banner should have a reason. (Poster 2)"
Week 14
"Design: portrait to plain. should photoshop it. her face skin crack or blood dropping for her eyes or nose or lips."
"Animation: mirror shouldn't move, try animate spider web, wall crack, skin carak, eye blink, blood drop etc. not all of them though"
"Spider web you animated it wrong. should use puppet warp."
"Now is only B to B+. Make it at least A-"
REFLECTION
Experience
Personally the first part of the project was pretty tough for me. My mind was pretty much all over the place because I feel like there's so many parts of me that is tough to showcase in one single poster. That's why in the end I just went with one theme. Tough it was tough, I enjoyed some parts of the project like photoshopping myself and seeing bits and pieces put together was quite cool to watch. Of course with the guidance of Mr. Martin, he helped and guided me to design a better poster. As for the second part of the project, which was animating the poster, I really did enjoy that part. It was so fascinating seeing how normal stagnant pictures started to move. Overall, though this project was tough, I did learn a lot and enjoyed loads of it as well.
Observation
I noticed that when you're animating something, sometimes simple is best. You should not animate every single item in the picture or it'll look too messy. When making a poster, you should try to make it simple too, as too many things complicated. Also, things must be added to a design/work for a purpose and not for the sake of just adding it there.
Findings
I find myself looking at more surrealism arts on Pinterest. It is so interesting to look at and try to figure out how other designers think. I now know that there is lots of effort, time and hard work that goes into even the simplest designs, therefore I start to appreciate it more. Lastly, animations are not an easy thing to do. It takes time, like thinking about where the next position is next, or where to rotate next etc.
