LECTURES

WEEK 10 - Lecture 10 (7/6/2023)
At the start of the class, Mr. Hafiz introduced our 3rd project to us and briefed us on it. He then taught us about light and shadow which we missed out during week 9 due to the cancelled class. We did a few exercises regarding light and shadow, we also learnt to use the knife tool. Below are the attached images on my take on the exercises.

WEEK 11 - Lecture 11 (14/6/2023)
This week's class was recorded. However we still had exercises to complete. We had to create our own patterns and make snakes using the width tool.

WEEK 12 - Lecture 12 (21/6/2023)
This week was consultation week. Ms. Anis conducted the class by going around and checking everyone's progression and giving feedbacks and suggestions.

INSTRUCTIONS
The new project is called DIGITAL TRIPTYCH.
For this project we had to choose a story from the linked website. Break down the narrative of the chosen story into 3-act structures of Introduction - Climax - Epilogue. Then create 3 panels digital triptych illustrating each of the act.

The challenges are:

  1. Only one story from this website: https://poestories.com/stories.php

  2. No, you cannot use other story than the ones from the website

  3. Visuals are displayed in a series of three

  4. Include short non-spoiler text for each act

SKETCH:
The story I chose was "Berenice", it was a horror story about teeth. I drew 2 ideas on procreate.

DIGITAL TRIPTYCH PROGRESS:

Picture 1:
I decide to go with sketch 1 for the first picture. This picture represents how Egaeus only saw Berenice as the only bright thing in his life and even proposed to her. Also, I wanted to make my designs look like stained glass painting.

Fig. Picture 1 (19/6/2023)

After some feedback and suggestions from Ms. Anis, here is my improved picture 1.

Fig. Picture 1 (After improvement) (22/6/2023)

Added a diffuse glow to make it look more like stained glass art.

Picture 2:
Same concept for picture 2, I went for a stained glass look, I went with sketch 1 for picture 2. The symbol on the head of the men represents obsession as he was weirdly obsessed with Berenice's teeth.

Picture 3:
I didn't like both of my sketches for picture 3. The first sketch for picture 3 would be repetitive as picture 1 already has a hand holding something. Therefore, I decided to make a box with a tooth floating on top of it. The box was when Egaeus found the box he had after plucking the teeth from Berenice.

Fig. Box (26/6/2023)

Made the tooth and some parts of the box have an outer glow so it has more impact and the focus is on the tooth.

Did a different stained glass art background for the 3rd picture:

Only added diffuse glow to the background. Did not add diffuse glow to the tooth and box as it already has glow around it.

FEEDBACK
Week 12: (Consultation session - Digital Triptych)
  • Strokes can be black instead of white, can be thicker also.
  • Can add gradient to parts of the picture to have shadow effect.

REFLECTION

Experience
For this project, I was definitely much more familiar with the tools in Adobe Illustrator. I actually did enjoy this project. It brushed up my skills a lot more. Allowing myself to creating something of my own and tell a story was interesting and fun to do. Having no limits and being allowed to choose the theme, design etc was amazing! However, this project was pretty time consuming. From having to sketch, do each image one by one and picking the suitable stroke and colour for each object was time consuming. Nevertheless, I once again did enjoy this project as lots of effort was put into it.

Observation
I noticed that colours, gradients and strokes are very important. As for me, my pictures were pretty plain at first. But after some feedback like adding gradient and changing the stroke size and colour, the picture came together even better. It looked much more put together and it elevated the picture.

Findings
I find myself admiring book covers more. It is definitely not an easy job to create that one page. Lots of effort, time and work are put into that one page which people usually just look over that first page. I now look at art designs a more different way. Like seeing how the design fits with the story amazes me now.
