LECTURES

WEEK 1 - 29/8/2023

During the first class of the week, Mr. Martin first briefed us on the platforms we'll be using and our assignments. He also showed us many examples of pass student's work. And for our tutorial class, he gave us a tutorial on how Adobe Premier Pro works. He taught us the first task so that we could first familiarise ourselves with it. After that we were given the second task, but this time we had to do it by ourselves.

WEEK 2 - 5/9/2023
For today's class, we learnt about framing and storyboard. Mr. Martin first let us watch a video and taught us each shot size there were. He then let us watch another video and tested us on the shot sizes shown in the video and asked us to explained why that shot was shot in that size. After that, we were given a class activity which was to pair up with someone and take different shot sizes. My class activity work was shot with my classmate Adora. (Class work will be at the bottom) At the end of class, Mr. Martin gave us our first project (Audio Dubbing) and told us what to do first, which was to list the scenes and sound effects needed for each scene.

WEEK 3 - 12/9/2023
For this week, Mr. Martin taught us about the Three-Act Structure by giving us examples and showing us videos. He then used another video to quiz students in the class to see if we all understood the structure. After that he gave us a short tutorial on our audio dubbing exercise and ended class.

Story Structure: 3 - Act - Structure

Beginning: Setup / introduction of a story

Middle: Confrontation of a problem

End: Resolution of problems

WEEK 4 - 19/9/2023
For week 4, we started off with our lecture and as always Mr. Martin would let us watch videos for us to better understand whatever he was teaching which was Mise En Scène (Setting the Stage). Later on, Mr. Martin gave us a brief on project 1 and 2 and we were told to kick start our project 2 which was a production shoot. We had to decide roles on the production crew. Lastly, Mr. Martin brought us all to the studio so that we could learn how to use the equipment for our project.

WEEK 5 - 26/9/2023
Mr. Martin was outstation, therefore he gave us our project 2 (production shoot). The class was split into two teams and each team had to shoot their own respective scenes from a movie.

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 1 - EXERCISE 1 (Audio Dubbing)
Our first assignment is called audio dubbing. We are to Sync the required audios in Premiere Pro (Speech & Sound effects only, no music)
Speech: Record with phone.
Sound Effects: Find online.
  1. Watch the video on Premiere Pro timeline.
  2. List down each scene on spreadsheet.
  3. List out each sound effects for each scene.
  4. Record voice with phone, search sound effects online.
  5. Place audio files on timeline, sync it with video.
  6. Audio track: 4 tracks for dialogue, one character one track. 3 tracks for sound effects, 3 tracks for ambience sound.

Progress:

We were first asked to list out the hard sound effects and ambient sounds in an excel sheet.

TRANSITIONS FOR EVERY AUDIO CLIP:

PROJECT 1 - EXERCISE 2 (Sound Shaping)
Record your own voice for 5 seconds for Exercise 2 submission.
My sentence: Hello? Is anyone out there? Can someone please help me, I'm right here.

  1. Voice of phone call. I first added the parametric equalizer following Mr. Martin's tutorial. But to make it more believable, I added some slight distortion.

  2. Voice coming from inside of closet. While I was playing around with audition, I found this preset called "The Club Downstairs" from the FFT Filter. However the present wasn't to my liking, therefore I altered it a bit till satisfied.

  3. Voice of toilet/bathroom. I watched this tutorial and learnt about the Megaphone EQ which really worked for the voice coming from the toilet effect. However since the voice was still a bit loud, I compressed the sound slightly by adding the parametric equalizer.

  4. Underground cave. I found a tutorial here on how to make the cave effect. I followed the tutorial and adjusted the room size and damping LF to my liking.

Alien/ Orc voice For this one, I played around with the app and added a few things to make it sound like an alien.

To make the voice sound sharper and squeakier, I increased the semi-tones.

Fig. Echo Added

I thought it would be cool to have two tones going on at once, so I added a lower pitch tone.

FEEDBACK

Week 4: "Remember to have 10 audio tracks and have audio transitions for each audio."

REFLECTION
Experience
These two exercises were really fun. The first one was slightly tricky, there were lots of details to pay attention to, like the sound effects and the ambient sounds. It was my first time editing somethings like this, the part where I had to do a voice over and change my voice to sound like a man and a little child was so fascinating! I did struggle a bit but after that I slowly got the hang of it. The second exercise was fun as well, it was fun to play around with the app and try out how the different functions could change the voice to sound like it is in different settings.

Observation
I observed that sounds and music are very important. People tend to only focus on the main editing of the video but do not know how important and how much of an impact the background sounds and the type of music used can make in a video. I observed that when editing an audio, you have to listen to it many many times and keep tweaking and editing it till it is right. I observed also that there is no correct or specific way to edit an audio, like Mr. Martin said, we could just tweak it and play around with it until is sounds right.

Findings
I find myself listening to more things when watching a video or a movie. It really isn't easy to edit different sounds. Sometimes people have to even make their own sounds for a movie, like the video that Mr. Martin showed us in class. People actually use different objects to make sound effects for a movie which I find so cool! I start to appreciate audio editors much more, I do personally feel that they're not recognised and appreciated enough for their work as editing audio takes way more time and effort than it seems.
