Task 1
Lecture Notes
Gestalt theory:
- This theory was developed to see how people perceive the world around them.
- "Gestalt" refers to "shape" or "form" in German.
- The principle aims to show how complex scenes can be reduced to more simple
shapes.
Contrast:
- It's the juxtaposition of strongly dissimilar elements. Without it visual
experience would be monotonous.
- It can also provide visual interest, emphasise a point and express content.
Emphasis:
- Used to create dominance and focus in a design work. Various elements can be
used.
Balance:
- Balance refers to the distribution of visual weight in a work of design.
It's the visual equilibrium of the elements that causes the total image to
appear balanced.
- Symmetrical balance: Has equal weight on equal sides of a centrally placed
fulcrum. Results in radial balance.
- Asymmetrical balance: Unequal visual weight on each side of the composition.
Evokes feelings of modernism, movement, energy and vitality.
Repetition:
- Repetition creates patterns.
- It makes a work of design seem active. It also creates rhythm and pattern
within the work.
Movement:
- The way a design leads the eye in, around, and through a composition - the
path the eye follows.
- Occurs when objects seem to be moving in a visual image.
Harmony & Unity:
Harmony:
- Involves the selection of elements that share a common trait. Harmony
becomes monotony without variety.
- Makes a sense that all elements of the design fit together.
Unity:
- The repetition of particular elements throughout your design to pull the
look together.
- When elements are composed in such a way that they're balanced and give a
sense of oneness.
Symbol:
- A sign, shape or object that is used to represent something.
- It can provide or convey information.
Word & Image:
- Imagery is a vital part of design. Viewers are able to relate to a concept
or a brand if the right images are used in a work of design. (Therefore it's
important to use suitable and relevant images when designing.)
- Choosing the right words to pair with the imagery is of high importance as
it would deepen the meaning of the design.
- Suitable typeface and strategic positioning of the type will result in
visual hierarchy and balance.

Title: The joy of summer
Year: 2022
Size: 400mm x 280mm
https://folksy.com/items/8012737-Mixed-media-painting-The-Joy-of-Summer-climate-change-art-400-mm-x-280-mm
I chose this artwork because it is a simple hand painted artwork with little elements but lots of expression as I feel the art is trying to tell a story. From my understanding of this artwork, the sun is blazing hot which was caused by humans who made climate change. And because of that caused many consequences. The trees are dead as well as the animal skeleton, which to me represents the many living creatures that are suffering till the point they die or goes extinct. Another consequence is the dry and cracked ground and the extremely hot weather which is shown in the artwork by painting the sky bright red. Another reason why I chose and like this artwork is because it evokes emotion and and gives huge impact to alert others about the future if climate change continuous for the worse.
Design principles:
1. Repetition
2. Unity
3. Emphasis
4. Balance
Weekly Feedback
Week 2:
- Add examples to each design principle with the link attached below.
- Change the artwork that was chosen, must be from an actual artists.
Week 3:
- Can keep progress from past few weeks but no need to put in blog.
- Shorten the link for each picture.
- “Balance” doesn’t apply to the artwork.
Reflection
Experience
This task was quite interesting for me as I got to learn a lot about different design principles that I've never discovered before. It shocks me that there are so many different ways to make an artwork more visually pleasing and have a sense of oneness. Furthermore, researching about different artworks and seeing how the artist express themselves through their artwork was beyond fascinating. Also looking thoroughly through the artwork made me see many details that the artist has painted that I usually wouldn't notice.
Observation
During the task, I noticed myself unconsciously applying design principles to different artworks while searching for the right artwork for my task. I also observed that artists use metaphor in their artwork which really amazed me, this was a new and interesting way for me to express something in an artwork.
Findings
I find that I really start to admire different artists that I discover as I love the way they express their thoughts through art. I also find that the hue and brightness of a painting can make a difference depending on where you place it. For example the artwork I chose had brighter colour in the golden ratio and rule of third's area.
Future Reading
What are design principles?
Design principles are guidelines, biases and design considerations that designers apply with discretion. Professionals from many disciplines—e.g., behavioral science, sociology, physics and ergonomics—provided the foundation for design principles via their accumulated knowledge and experience. (Interaction Design Foundation, 2016)
Watercolour:
Any artwork that is created by using watercolor as a medium is known as watercolor art. Watercolor contains pigment particles combined with a binder from natural sources like gum, glucose, and glycerine. It is water-soluble. (Eden Gallery, 2021)
