Assignment 1 - Comparative Study of Media Art Practitioners

LECTURE

WEEK 1 - 23/4/2025
During the first week, both Mr. Shakir and Mr. Zeon were there to share what performative media is. We then got a brief introduction of the entire module and also the assignments we are going to do for this semester. After that, Mr. Zeon told us that we had to find groups of 4 for the group assignment and called it a day.

WEEK 2 - 30/4/2025
For this week, Mr. Shakir shared with us about creative coding. He showed us videos about it and also how people use the platform "touchdesign" which we will be using for this semester. He taught us a bit about the nodes and operators of touchdesign and how easy it is to use without needing to code. He also shared with us slightly about how coding evolved throughout the years. After that, he briefed us the details on assignment 1 and ask us to start researching on it.

WEEK 3 - 7/5/2025
At the start of this week's class, Mr. Shakir gave a recap of the first two classes of the semester. Then after that, he gave us a tutorial on how to use Touch Designer. He started off by showing us the UI of the app, like how to save it and where certain features are etc.

TOP = Texture operator, anything visual. (Brightness, hue, saturation etc.)
CHOP = Channel operator, take in any visuals/audios and change and manipulate it.
SOP = Surface operator, creating, importing, modifying, and combining 3D geometry.

I wanted to play around with the app and get familiar with it. So I looked for a simple tutorial online to try. And I came out with something. (Click here for the tutorial I followed.)

Refer to W4(1) for my attempt.

WEEK 4 - 14/5/2025
In week 4, Mr. Shakier gave us a tutorial on noise TOP. After teaching us here and there, he asked us to explore and play around with the software and come up with something before the class ends. After that, we had consultation regarding our assignment 1 with sir and ended class.

INSTRUCTIONS

Assignment Description:
You are required to study and compare the work of three media art practitioners or studios:
  • 1 International media art practitioner or studio
  • 1 Regional (Southeast Asia) media art practitioner or studio
  • 1 Local (Malaysia) media art practitioner or studio
Your research should focus on how these practitioners incorporate interdisciplinary approaches
— drawing from fields such as performing arts, digital media, spatial interaction, anthropology,
sociology, cybernetics, cognitive neuroscience, and aesthetics — into their conceptual thinking
and execution of performative or interactive installations.

PROGRESS:

WEEK 2
This week we were instructed to start on our first assignment. After the brief of the assignment, our group had a meeting to research and decide on which artist we were going to do a case study on for each category. We brainstormed and just listed a lot of art practitioners and then only short-listed them. After that we sent them to Mr. Zeon for confirmation.

These were our final choices:
International:
Daan Roosegaarde (Netherlands)

Regional:
Yellaban

Local:
FrameMotion

During the weekend, we started to research on the international practitioner's work. Looking at Daan Roosegaarde's work was really interesting. Seeing how he could come up with so many interesting work made me more interested in this module. After doing the research and asking the lecturers for confirmation on whether the work we will research on is ok, we finalised with 2 of Daan's work.

Next, we delegated our work and did one slide per person. I was in charge of the "Audience Experience & Interactivity" slide. We agreed to finish at least one practitioner this week to show to Mr. Shakir during the following tutorial.

WEEK 3
Right after class, we stayed back to finalise our regional and local practitioner's work which we will be further focusing on. We decided to finalise on 2 projects/installations per practitioner and delegated our work. We decided to all do the same slides that we did for the international practitioner so it wouldn't be such a hassle to delegate all over again. I started with doing the local practitioner first since we were more sure on that one.

Regional Practitioner - Yallaban from Thailand
Project 1: Makita ASA 18 https://vimeo.com/279425783
Project 2: Immersive Zoo

Local Practitioner - Frame Motion from Malaysia
Project 1: The Bloom of Love & Memory https://www.framemotionstudio.com/property/the-greatest-artist/

While doing some research I found that the Immersive Zoo wasn't done by yellaban, but only partially of it not the interactive part. So we had to reselect our regional practitioner.

Regional Practitioner - 27junestudio from Thailand

WEEK 4
This week is our submission week, we were almost done with everything and just had to touch up our slides and film our presentation. Once we were done with the slides, we met up online to delegate which part we each present and then started to film our presentation.

WEEKLY FEEDBACK

WEEK 3 - 7/5/2025
- Can proceed with the chosen practitioners.
- Try to find those that are interactive and immersive.

WEEK 4 - 14/5/2025
- So far everything looks good.
- Don't use all caps for text, for headings is alright.
- More slides is alright.
REFLECTION

Experience
Over the past few weeks, I was introduced to a completely new concept—creative coding—through the software TouchDesigner. At first, I felt a little overwhelmed since I don’t know much about this module, but Mr. Shakir’s step-by-step guidance and live tutorials helped ease my nerves. I especially enjoyed the hands-on tasks where we were encouraged to try building simple visual projects using nodes. Following an online tutorial outside of class helped me explore on my own and made me realize how fun and intuitive TouchDesigner can be. Week by week, I grew more confident in navigating the software and understanding its potential. The group assignment went really well also, everyone had really good teamwork and cooperated really well. We all had good time management and finished everything on time.

Observation
Through the lectures and group discussions, I started noticing how media art goes beyond just “looking cool.” It’s deeply conceptual, experimental, and can carry strong messages. Watching the examples shared in class, I was amazed by how artists use platforms like TouchDesigner to create immersive experiences.
Working in a group made me more aware of how important it is to balance our roles and listen to each other's viewpoints. Everyone has different strengths, and I realized that I learn a lot just by hearing how others think. It made the assignment feel less like a school task and more like a collaborative project.

Findings
Coming from a Creative Media (UI/UX) background, I’m already familiar with tech-based tools, but TouchDesigner introduced a different way of thinking—more experimental and less structured. It reminded me that not all digital media has to follow a clear system like in UI/UX; sometimes it’s about expression and emotion.

Through the group assignment, I also realized the value of blending technical knowledge with artistic interpretation. It challenged me to think beyond functionality and explore how tech can be used for storytelling and impact.
